Course Overview
The aim of this article is to explore the critical role of dental nurses in the design and refurbishment of dental surgeries. It examines how hands-on clinical experience informs practical decisions regarding infection control, ergonomic health, and the creation of sensory-friendly environments for patients with additional needs.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this CPD module, the reader will be able to:
- Explain how dental nurses bridge the gap between theoretical architectural planning and real-world clinical practice.
- Identify key design elements that support HTM 01-05 compliance, such as safe zoning and instrument flow.
- Discuss the benefits of ambidextrous surgery design for team ergonomics and staff wellbeing.
- Describe specific environmental adjustments – such as lighting and acoustics – that improve the experience for neurodivergent or anxious patients.
- Recognise how the rise of dental nurse-led clinics provides a unique dual perspective on operational and clinical surgery functionality.
