Course Overview

The aim of this article is to expose the critical lack of regulation, oversight, and standardisation in medical emergency training for UK dental teams and advocate for a national standard to safeguard patients and professionals.

On completion of this article, the reader will be able to:

  • Identify the current risks to patient safety and the professional due to the industry-wide inconsistency and misinformation in medical emergency training.
  • Understand that the dental professional and the practice are ultimately responsible for ensuring the accuracy and adequacy of their medical emergency training, regardless of the trainer’s advice.
  • Recognise the key guidance sources (Resuscitation Council UK and BNF) that all training must align with to ensure a competent response in critical moments.
  • Appreciate the need for systemic change, including a standardised curriculum, minimum trainer qualifications, and regulatory oversight for emergency training in dentistry.
